 FISHER HOUSE FACTS

Overview: The homes are normally located within walking distance of the treatment facility or have transportation available. There are 37 Fisher Houses located on 18 military installations and eight VA medical centers, and one new house, at the James A. Haley VA Medical Center in Tampa, FL is in construction.

Responsibilities: Fisher Houses are given to the U. S. Government as gifts. Military service secretaries and the Secretary of Veterans Affairs are responsible for the operation and maintenance of the homes. The Fisher House Foundation, Inc., a not-for-profit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code, builds new houses, and assists in the coordination of private support and encourages public support for the homes.

Eligibility and Cost: Criteria established locally by hospital or installation commanders. Effective October 1, 2006, all room fees for guest families at all Army, Navy, and Air Force Fisher Houses are paid by Fisher House Foundation. There are no room fees at Fisher Houses operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

December 2008

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Fisher House of the Emerald Coast marked the success of two years of planning and fund raising took place.

It will offer free temporary room and board to families of servicemen and women receiving medical care.  Eglin's 10,000 sq. ft. facility will have 12 suites and be built across the road from Eglin Regional Hospital.

"This got started because of caring," said Trecia Chedister, a founding member and former vice president of the Fisher House of the Emerald Coast.  "Fisher House at Eglin is a reality because of you, the community.  Thank you for caring for these families.  The Fisher House will pay it forward for many, many years."

Contributors included Army Rangers who collected more than $4,000 and Valparaiso Baptist Church, which raised $1,000.

As of December 2008 the Fisher House Foundation's 42 houses have helped more than 500,000 families said foundation president David Coker.  "As impressive as that is, it's not enough," he said.

The Fisher House Foundation operates on congressionally appropriated funds in areas with demonstrated community participation.  The homes are supported through a congressional trust fund and community donations.  Once the local board showed community support, the funds were matched.

"I love the fact that the military and the public care enough about the military to support the Fisher House," said Jane Eidsaune, wife of General Eidsaune and an honorary board member.

In 1990 Pauline Trost, wife of Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Carlisle Trost, presents to Mr. and Mrs. Fisher the need for temporary lodging facilities for families at major military medical centers.

In 1991 President George H.W. Bush dedicates the first Fisher House at Bethesda, Maryland.

Today, there are over 35 Fisher Houses in the United States and Europe.

Fisher Houses have served more than 110,000 families, profiding over 2 million days of lodging and saving military families more than $90 million.  In addition to constructing new houses, Fisher House Foundation continues to support existing Fisher houses and help military families in need.

In addition to constructing new houses, Fisher House Foundation continues to support existing Fisher Houses and help individual military families in need.

Now if the time to show how much the residents of Northwest Florida truly do "support the troops".  If you would like to contribute to the construction, furnishing and operation of the Fisher House of the Emerald Coast, we welcome your individual and corporate donations.

Fisher house flourish thanks to the kind hands of volunteers which are crucial to daily operations.  If you are interested in making a donation or looking for volunteer opportunities don't hesistate to contact me at (850) 225-9899.

Team Eglin along with local communities and regional bases are working together to bring a Fisher House to Eglin AFB.

Once the facility opens, we all will have the privilage of maintaining the home.  thus enabling family and friends to be close to a loved one during hospitalization for an illness, disease or injury.
